The Shumlin Gas Tax - Painful And Unnecessary

There has been much discussion in Montpelier and the rest of our great state about the Shumlin gas tax hike that went into effect on May 1 of this year. Some have described this 6-cent per gallon tax hike as a "painful necessity." Many in the state Legislature who voted for the tax hike, predominantly Democrats, have pointed to the desperate need for more cash to meet federal matching fund requirements. They point to all the great and necessary projects that would need to be scrapped if the Shumlin tax hike wasn't passed by our state Legislature. It is true, Vermont's transportation infrastructure is in disrepair. In all corners of our state we can find roads, bridges, and culverts in need of repair or replacement. The only flaw with the Democrat's assertion that our needs justify the tax hike is that it is false!

Scandal Time

Every so often, Washington gets bored with merely mismanaging the country. It isn't enough to cook up a program for turning perfectly good corn into ethanol and requiring that it be mixed in with gasoline, thus driving up food prices, ruining a lot of small internal combustion engines, increasing e.coli levels in beef cattle, and doing nothing at all to improve the environment. That gets old, after a while. As does spending more than 70 billion a year by a Department of Education that doesn't seem to improve education much but does keep a lot of consultants and "experts" in the chips. And there is some amusement to be found in paying almost $900,000 in service fees to keep open more than 13,000 bank accounts open.
