BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) — Vermont police have identified the Brattleboro police officer who shot and killed a suspect during a drug investigation.
State police say Mark Carignan of the Brattleboro Police Department shot 35-year-old Michael Santiago of Brattleboro on April 4 as he and other officers executed a search warrant at a motel.
As officers entered, police say Carignan fired his weapon, hitting Santiago.
The case will be reviewed by the Bennington County state's attorney and the Vermont attorney general's office. The Brattleboro Police Department is conducting an internal investigation.
The Windham County state's attorney office was originally going to review the case but announced it will not to ensure impartiality.
