NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) — Police in northern Vermont say a suspect is in custody following a four-hour standoff in the northern city of Newport.
There have been no reports of injuries, but witness Tyler Dumont of the Lyndon State College television station said 10 people were released from a house on the street where police were gathered.
Heavily armed state, local, county and federal law enforcement officers surrounded a home where the armed suspect was said to be on the roof.
Shortly before 7 a.m., police had ordered residents on Highland Avenue between West Main and Pleasant streets to stay in their homes and lock their doors. They were later told to evacuate.
Around 11 a.m., police alerted residents that they had a person in custody and all lockdowns were cancelled.
