St. J Plows Past Rebels
From Staff Reports

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Powered by its defense, the St. J Academy boys basketball team ran its Division I record to 14-0, routing host South Burlington 77-35 on Thursday night – the second blowout victory over the one-win Rebels this season.

SJA sophomore guard Tristen Ross finished with a game-high 17 points, an encore to his 26-point showing in a home win over Colchester on Monday. Teammates Vlad Cobzaru (15 points, 11 rebounds), Jake Grinbergs (14-11), Brendan O’Shea (11 points) and Drew Hovey (six points, seven boards) also filled the stat sheet.

The Hilltoppers opened the game on a 10-0 run and held the Rebels to just nine first-half points en route to a 33-9 lead at the break.

“Our defense was key,” SJA coach Tom O’Shea said. “The key on the road is to get off to a good start. We’ve gotten into a little trouble when we let teams hang around. We forced South Burlington into some tough shots early tonight.”

Jeremy Clements had 11 points to lead the Rebels (1-13), who were also outgunned 81-49 on Jan. 5 at Alumni Memorial Gym.

It was the third straight win of 33 points or more for St. J Academy, which gets into the teeth of its schedule down the stretch. Five of the Hilltoppers’ last six games come against teams with a winning record.

Up first is a Monday meeting at Essex. Game time is 6:30. The Hilltoppers’ next home game is Thursday against CVU, also at 6:30.

“The kids have done a good job,” O’Shea said of his squad’s unbeaten start. “But we should get challenged heading into the playoffs. And that’s a good thing.”
