Former Vt. Gov. Douglas hits deer on interstate

COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) -- Vermont State Police say former Vermont Gov. James Douglas and his wife, Dorothy, escaped injury when their car hit a deer on Interstate 89 in Colchester.

Police say the 62-year-old Douglas of Middlebury was driving north on the Interstate on Saturday shortly before 6 p.m. when he reported hitting the animal.

Douglas' Chrysler 200 had to be towed from the scene. State police say the deer could not be found.

Douglas, a Republican, was first elected governor in 2002; he left office in January 2011.
