Trial set for 2nd suspect in 3 Berkshire killings

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- A second suspect in the killings of three men in Berkshire County in 2011 is scheduled to go on trial in April, but exactly where remains in question.

On Monday, a judge set a date of April 22 for the murder trial of David Chalue.

Chalue's lawyer filed several motions, The Berkshire Eagle ( ) reported. In one, he asked that because of massive publicity about the case in Berkshire and Hampden counties, the trial be moved to Hampshire or Worcester counties.

Chalue, 46, of North Adams, is accused of helping Adam Lee Hall kidnap and kill David Glasser, Robert Chadwell and Edward Frampton, all of Pittsfield, in August 2011. Hall was convicted this month of three counts of first-degree murder. Hall wanted Glasser dead to prevent him from testifying against him in an unrelated assault case, and the others were killed so there would be no witnesses, prosecutors said. The victim's dismembered bodies were found weeks later buried in Becket.

Three men were charged with the slayings while a fourth was charged with helping dispose of the bodies.

Chalue is being held without bail after pleading not guilty.

Chalue's name was mentioned in numerous media stories in reporting on Hall's trial, defense attorney Donald Frank said.

"That trial was blogged ... almost on a daily basis," he said. "The coverage was extensive."

Berkshire District Attorney David Capeless argued against the motion, and the judge appeared skeptical of moving the trial. Judge Jeffrey Kinder said he was "struck by the relative ease" of selecting a jury for Hall's trial in Hampden County.

The judge did not immediately rule on the motions.
