Crimeline of Southern NH disbanded after 30 years

SALEM, N.H. (AP) -- After 30 years of trying to help solve crimes, Crimeline of Southern New Hampshire is being disbanded.

Board member Ron Penczak told The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/NnmUPb) that a major decrease in tips in recent years prompted the group to discontinue the anonymous tip line and website.

The service started as Salem Crimeline in 1984 and then expanded to serve Derry, Londonderry and Windham. Penczak says it helped solve about 70 cases over the years, leading to 42 criminals and the recovery of $71,000 in stolen goods.

Tipsters received up to $1,000 if the information they provided led to a conviction, with community donations funding the effort.

Manchester police, however, say while other Crimelines have seen tips plummet in recent years, their department's program has been very successful.
