Vt. House advances statewide stun gun policy bill

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- The Vermont House has given preliminary approval to a bill setting a statewide policy on training police officers before they are issued electronic stun guns.

The measure won preliminary approval on Tuesday on a voice vote with little debate.

Backers say the bill is aimed at ensuring uniform standards for police use of the weapons throughout Vermont.

But critics -- including the mother of MacAdam Mason of Thetford, who was killed by a state trooper's Taser in 2012 -- say the bill is inadequate.

Rhonda Taylor -- Mason's mother -- says the bill is not specific enough and gives police officers too much leeway in when to use the weapons.
