Vermont House, Senate at odds over drugged driving

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- The Vermont House has refused to go along with Senate changes to a bill seeking to crack down on drugged driving, leaving differences to be worked out in a legislative conference committee.

The House version of the bill set a standard for finding a driver under the influence of drugs in which police would have to show someone was under the influence of drugs "to the slightest degree."

The Senate Judiciary Committee, concerned that impairment by drugs is difficult to measure, changed the language to say a person could be charged if their driving was impaired "to the slightest degree."

But as the Senate passed its version on Tuesday, it amended the language to remove the phrase "to the slightest degree." The House disagrees with that change.
