Shumlin signs bills to focus development in towns

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) -- Gov. Peter Shumlin has signed into law three bills designed to bring more economic vitality to Vermont's city and town centers.

The governor signed the bills Tuesday on the front porch of the St. Albans House, a historic building in that city's center that has been rehabilitated into apartments and offices.

The measures address designated growth centers. One bars commercial development outside a designated center from contributing to strip development. It encourages development in community centers, or by infilling within existing strip development.

They also target transportation infrastructure aid to projects that center on downtown development.
