Discussion to center on replacing old bridge in NH

CONWAY, N.H. (AP) -- The New Hampshire Department of Transportation will meet with leaders in Conway, N.H., next week to discuss rebuilding a badly deteriorated bridge on a busy road to Fryeburg, Maine.

David Scott of the department told WMWV-FM the narrow, 106-foot-long, two-lane bridge that runs over the Conway Lake outlet on U.S. Route 302 is on the state's "redlist." That means it's seriously degraded, primarily due to the corrosive effects of road salt and water. It has priority for replacement.

Scott says there's no danger that the current bridge will collapse. He said the replacement bridge will cost about $3.1 million and would be expected to last for 75 years. He said if funds become available, the project could start as early as the summer of 2015.

Scott will present replacement options to Conway selectmen at their meeting on Sept. 10.

The meeting also is to solicit public input in order to ensure that project decisions meet public transportation needs, community goals, and protect and enhance the environment.
