NVRH Birth Center Is One Of The First In Vermont To Introduce The Option Of Nitrous Oxide During Labor
The Birth Center at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital now offers pregnant women the choice of using Nitrous Oxide during labor and delivery. Nitrous Oxide is a blend of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide to relieve pain and anxiety during labor and delivery. Several countries with high standards for health care, such as Canada, Sweden, Australia, Finland and the United Kingdom have used nitrous oxide for years.

Caledonia Home Health Care & Hospice Selected To Participate In The Medicare Care Choices Model
ST. JOHNSBURY -- Caledonia Home Health Care & Hospice, member of VNAs of VT Consortium, has been selected to participate in the Medicare Care Choices Model, announced today by Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. The model provides Medicare beneficiaries who qualify for coverage under the Medicare Hospice Benefit and dually eligible beneficiaries who qualify for the Medicaid Hospice Benefit the option to elect to receive supportive care services typically provided by hospice and continue to receive curative services at the same time. Today's announcement is part of a larger effort at HHS to transform our health care system to deliver better care, spend our dollars in a smarter way, and put patients in the center of their care.

Union Bank Supports New Birthing Center At LRH
LITTLETON, N.H. -- The Littleton Regional Healthcare Charitable Foundation accepted a generous donation of $15,000 from the officers, directors and employees of Union Bank recently. The funds will support the Foundation's capital campaign, "Delivery Our Future". The campaign began last October to raise money for a major expansion and renovations to the current birthing center at Littleton Regional Healthcare.

Today's column is the third in a three part series on why patients may feel numbness and/or tingling in their hands. To review, numbness is lack of feeling in the body part when touched, and tingling is a sensation of pins and needles, often described as "falling asleep". Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually just numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger, occasionally with weakness, like dropping a coffee cup, and no pain. Pinched nerves in the neck typically cause numbness and tingling in the hand, with pain, but usually only one or two fingers, with or without weakness. Sometimes there is pain in the shoulder blade as well.
