College Students Need To Prepare For Success
Within weeks freshmen will begin to pour onto college campuses, each student brimming with excitement and promise. Each hopes this will be a time of growth and the start to something big. Statistically speaking, there is reason for each to pause; it may not be as easy as it looks. Some sources cite as many as 80 percent of students will switch their major at least once and many will switch two or three times. Each switch can cost time and energy and is exacerbated when switching in the later years of college.

Lyndonville Head Start children and staff were visited by Jason Brueck, director of Siskin Ecological Adventures on June 16. Jason shared a unit on snakes, showing the children and staff a red bellied snake and a baby garter snake, and gave a brief lesson on them.

Sutton School Student Garden
SUTTON SCHOOL GARDEN PRODUCING FOR THE FALL -- Elizabeth Tanner volunteered to help the after-school program at the Sutton School plant and grow vegetables for the school. The garden planning started earlier in the spring and the students planned, planted and maintained the garden. Tanner has been keeping it up during the summer and when school starts, there will be plenty of fresh, locally grown vegetables on the school menu.

Brighton Students Win Best Of Vermont At National History Day
ISLAND POND -- Brighton Elementary School students Allison Gray and Abigail Nadeau recently won Best of Vermont for the Junior Division at the National History Day in Maryland. National History Day is preceded by Vermont History Day -- an exciting education program which encourages students to study history and expand their knowledge. Hosted by the Vermont Historical Society, the contest provides students the opportunity to share the knowledge they have gained from their historical research by creating projects for the National History Day contest.

Area first-year students join UVM's Honors College
One-hundred-ninety-six incoming first-year students have joined the University of Vermont's Honors College. Admission to UVM's Honors College is by invitation; the Honors College works with the Office of Admissions to review the academic records of the university's entering class each year and invites top performers to enroll. Invitation to the Honors College is based on high school academic performance and a commitment to creating a diverse learning community. The college selects students from a variety of academic areas, from the humanities and sciences to environmental studies and education, from nursing and social work to business, in order to enhance this intentionally diverse community of scholars.

Margaux Morris, of Barton, was recently named to the dean's list at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa. Margaux is a Psychology major. To qualify for dean's list, a student must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

St. Johnsbury Academy recently named the recipients of the annual Dwayne B. Sherrer Alumni Distinguished Service Award. This year, the school honored Bill Hanson and Pamela Burns Kocher, both from the Class of 1964. They received their awards during their 50th reunion celebration.

Lyndon State College students enrolled in the Design Studio Course, a course that offers students the opportunity to gain practical work experience prior to graduation, worked with a number of non profits before the end of the 2014 spring semester. The individuals and groups came up with designs for web pages, posters, brochures and event flyers among other things.
