Spring Field Day At Old Stone House
SPRING DAY AT THE OLD STONE HOUSE -- Craig Marcotte holds a sheep in a calm reclining position while he shows students how sheep were sheared with hand clippers, and then with power clippers, during Spring Field Day at the Old Stone House Museum on May 21. "By the time you get to the thousandth one," he said, "you really like it." He said that historically neighbors got together to shear sheep during spring sugaring season, between sap runs, when farmers were glad for the social interaction after the long winter. St. Paul's students Jake LeBlanc and P.J. Letourneau watch the shearing process. When the shearer is good, Eileen Wolf told the group, the fleece all falls off in one piece like a blanket. Children from Orleans Elementary, Coventry Village and St. Paul's School in Barton spent the day rotating among hands on presentations including sheep shearing, spinning, dairy, making cupcakes from an historic recipe, weaving, blacksmithing, tool sharpening and basket making. In the afternoon they sowed oats and flax in the museum gardens and visited the barns, where they saw exhibits on agriculture and transportation.
