In 1900, there were over 14,000 known varieties of apples in the United States alone. How many can you name? Have you heard of Pound Sweet, Winter Banana, Wolf River or Yellow Transparent? You and your family can taste test these apple varieties and loads more at the annual Apple Tasting Extravaganza. The 2012 Apple Tasting Extravaganza will be hosted by Walden Heights Nursery & Orchard on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m--4 p.m.
Come and discover your new favorite apples and tour the farm - which includes a 1,000+ tree orchard, berry plantation, greenhouses for experimental growing and an arboretum of more than 400 apple tree cultivars to preserve the genetic diversity of apples.
The Walden Heights 2012 fruit growing workshop series will conclude Saturday, October 13 at 2 p.m. with Strategies For Planting Trees In The Fall And Winterizing Your Fruit Trees. Fall is a great time to plant trees and get a jump start on the growing season next spring. Learn the strategies to ensure successful planting of your orchard this fall and find out how to make sure your new trees don't become victims of deer, rabbits and ice. The workshop will be led by Todd Parlo, owner of Walden Heights Nursery & Orchard- one of the only certified organic nurseries in North America- who helps customers choose fruit varieties appropriate for their climate, land and tastes.
