Youth State Track: St. J Reclaims Crown
ST. JOHNSBURY -- Their four-year win streak at the event was snapped last year by Burlington, but St. Johnsbury Rec won back first place among 17 teams at Saturday's annual Vermont Parks & Rec track & field state youth championship at St. Johnsbury Academy.

RUTLAND -- The OEC Kings' season came to a close on Friday afternoon when they fell to South Rutland Post 31, 11-5 at St. Peter's Field in an elimination game of the American Legion state tournament. In the loss, Andrew Gonyaw was 4-for-4, drove in three runs and scored twice.

All Star Twin State Game: Megan Wood, left, plays in the June 26 All Star Twin State field hockey game featuring Vermont vs. New Hampshire at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. Wood, who recently graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, was the first-ever SJA student-athlete chosen for the team. With Vermont trailing 3-1, Wood scored on an assist from Burlington Free Press athlete of the year, Kathleen Young. Then Vermont scored again to force overtime, with the Granite State prevailing in the extra session.

Built into a ravine, it gives riders a roller-coaster type of feel as they shoot down one side of the ravine, and let gravity do the rest up the other side of this scenic natural half pipe. Youth Sports: North Woods To Represent District III
BERLIN, N.H. -- North Woods will be the Cal Ripken District III rep at the state that circle the Fourth of July weekend. North Woods came through the winners' bracket and needed one more win going into the finals on Sunday, while Berlin-Gorham had to win twice. Berlin-Gorham won the first, 17-4. Then, in the decisive final, North Woods became the champion, 17-0 in four innings.

Local Sports: Seven Take Part in Son of a Swim
NEWPORT -- The Northeast Kingdom Open Water Swimming Association kicked off its summer season Saturday with the first round of Son of a Swim. Seven swimmers took to the waters of Mighty Memphremagog from Prouty Beach swimming two, four, or six miles. They travelled from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Stowe and Norwich, Vermont to swim in 65-degree water and prepare for the swim season ahead. Son of a Swim is intentionally small, capped at 10. It is intended to allow swimmers to "stretch" and qualify for longer distances at Kingdom Swim. Interest has grown to the point where we have added a second day on June 27th, with 10 signed up for Saturday.

DERBY -- The Northern Vermont Soccer School, now in its 29th year, will once again be held at the Junior High in Derby this summer. Camp directors and North Country Union girls varsity coaches Jose Batista and Peter Alexander will run the soccer school for boys and girls grades 1-12. It couldn't have been a better way to end a great four years for Falcons senior Sam Brunnette last Saturday. Competing at the D-I state meet at Burlington High School, he fought off stiff challenges in both events from South Burlington's Joseph Staples and Tyler Marshall of CVU to win the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs, and also helped the 800 relay team to a surprise victory as well.
