MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Three from White Mountains Regional placed in the top five at the Cross Country Division III state championship at Derryfield Park in Manchester on Saturday with Jessica Schanlaber in third, Alex Mae Curtis in fifth for the girls and Ethan Call in fourth for the guys.
The WMR girls team came in fourth and the top five go on to the Meet of Champions along with the the top 23 from Division III. Pittsburg's Kirby Judd will be among the best at Nashua South next Saturday.
Schanlaber shaved 45 seconds off her time on the same course last year and in her best yet covered the 5K course in 19:45, 16 seconds off the win in the pack of 164 runners. Hopkinton's Sarah Nadeau was the champ in 19:29, while nine seconds later Hawk teammate Maddie Clark claimed second.
Curtis was in the lead pack from the start and moved up a place in the last half mile of her first race on this course for a 20:10 and fifth place. Judd with a time of 21:31 was two places and 18 seconds off a top-10 finish.
The Spartan duo sparked a fourth-place finish for the girls among 21 teams. Hopkinton won with 45 points followed by Bow with 59, Monadnock with 146 and WMR came in with 149 points and Pelham with 160 points to round out the top five teams. Littleton paced by a 45th place for Kelsey Champagne in 24:24 came in 11th with 352 points, and Alexis Long (56th) clocked in at 24:55.
For the WM girls, Ada Wharton (40th) had a time of 23:54, and Abby Call (51st), 24:48. The fifth Spartan, Emily Cook (72nd), though hampered by a leg problem came in at 25:33, while Makenna Force at 26:00 outpaced 83 others.
Three of the top four Spartans played a soccer game in cold conditions less then 24 hours earlier and two of the top three boys did the same only on the road.
