ST. JOHNSBURY -- Thursday's snowstorm in Vermont has forced the postponement of the much-anticipated, early-season clash between the top two boys basketball teams in Division I.
The St. J Academy Hilltoppers (4-0), ranked No. 1 in the latest Vermont Basketball Coaches' Association poll, and the second-ranked Rice Green Knights (4-0) were slated to tip inside Alumni Memorial Gymnasium tonight at 6:30.
But heavy snow -- a reported 6 inches in Burlington and 2 in St. Johnsbury early Thursday morning with more expected throughout the day -- will push the season's first meeting between the schools to Monday, Jan. 14.
The teams' second regular-season meeting is slated for Feb. 14 in South Burlington.
The Hilltoppers are coming off a 73-31 victory Friday night in Brattleboro. With Thursday's postponement, SJA is off until its meeting at North Country on Jan. 3
Rice, which lost to MMU in last season's championship, swept the season series from St. J in 2011-12, then edged the Hilltoppers 48-44 in the opening round of the D-I playoffs.
