Local Roundup: SJA Fifth at Metro Golf Championship

SHELBURNE -- St. Johnsbury Academy placed fifth in the NVAC Metro Golf Championships on Thursday at Kwiniaska golf club.

The match was shortened because of lightning in the area. Scores were calculated by players' first-nine scores, though a few of the top players completed 18 holes.

Essex won with a team score of 169, Mount Mansfield and Champlain Valley tied for second (172) and Spaulding was fourth (173). SJA finished fives strokes back of Essex at 174. Hilltopper junior Alex Rainville tied for third with a 4-over 76, eight shots back of the winner, Mt. Abe's Jonah Scott.

"The wind and the weather from the last few days made the courses a little challenging," SJA coach Tom Manges said. "But I'm encouraged that these guys are optimistic and hope to do well at the sectionals Tuesday at Jay Peak."

At sectionals, a top-four team score will advance the team to the state tournament in Woodstock, and an individual top-five score will advance the individual athlete to the state tournament.

"It'll be a challenge for everybody that goes and I'm hopeful the boys will respond and be one of the four teams that make it to the state tournament," Manges said.

The Hilltoppers compete at Jay Peak Tuesday.

COLEBROOK 15, GROVETON 3 (5): In Groveton, N.H., after being stopped in the top of the fourth with two outs Wednesday and the score 13-1, play resumed Thursday. Jessa Kennett earned the win as Colebrook coasted to its 13th win.

"Jessa Kennett did a good job pitching and kept them off balance," Colebrook coach Michael Brosseau said. "We also got the lead early which was important."

Groveton's regular season is over, but Colebrook plays at home against WMR today at 4.

COLEBROOK 23, GROVETON 7: In a completion of Wednesday's rainout in Groveton, N.H., the Mohawks completed the five-inning rout to go into Friday's season finale at home (weather permitting) tied for first place with the Littleton Crusaders.

Thursday's game picked up in the top of the third with the visitors holding a 4-3 lead. At that point they exploded for nine runs, and piled on 10 more in the top of the fifth.

The Eagles scored two in the third on back-to-back triples by Brandon Marsh and Brandon Joy. "Joy's hit was just crushed, right on the screws," Mohawks coach Tim Purrington said. "If we're anywhere else but at their place, where it's 400 feet to the fences, it would've been out [of the park]."
