Chris Dornin: Governor Signs Earned Time Bill
It took three challenging years for New Hampshire prisoners to win themselves a decent chance to earn modest sentence reductions. Make that five years if you count all the ups and downs in the fight over SB 500, the Criminal Justice Reinvestment Act of 2010.

Guy Page: Despite EPA 'Pass,' Vermont Faces Carbon Reduction Challenges
State officials celebrated Vermont getting a "pass" after the U.S. EPA announced June 2 its state-by-state plan to reduce power-related carbon emissions 30% nationwide by 2030. Lacking any full-time fossil-fuel powered electricity generating plants, it is not surprising that Vermont is exempt from the new rule. While this may seem like a victory for the Green Mountain State, our energy policy has actually left us "browner," more vulnerable to price increases from the new rule, and virtually powerless over how our electricity is generated.

John McClaughry: School Consolidation, Charters, and Choice
Vermonters moan about their steadily rising education property taxes, especially as the number of students continually decreases. Rarely do citizens focus clearly on the causes of rising school taxes, and the possible solutions. That is, in part, because the "education stakeholders" are ever alert to control the agenda for "reform."

Geoffrey Norman: The Vanities
Remember the Arab Spring? It wasn't that long ago. Only three years. But it seems, now, to be part of another epoch. Something that might have taken place back when, if you wanted to cross an ocean, you got on a ship. But the Arab Spring was something we all watched in what people like to call "real time."

Suellen Griffin: First Aid Applies To Mental Health, Too
Every day, we pick up the newspaper, turn on the TV, or listen to the radio and hear about another tragic incident that has occurred somewhere in our country involving a person in a mental health crisis. Sandy Hook is the one closest to home in many ways, and unfortunately is the one we in New Hampshire remember hearing about most clearly.
