Rob Roper: Medicare's Future in Vermont... What Does Single Payer Intend?
There is some confusion out there, particularly among seniors, about what will happen to Medicare if Vermont adopts the single payer healthcare program, Green Mountain Care. Does the state intend to "take over" Medicare?

Geoffrey Norman: Fearless Leaders fear nothing ... except being out of power
It has been a rough week. More advances by ISIS which, at one point, was in a position close enough to the Baghdad airport that U.S. Apache helicopters were sent into the fight. Not exactly "boots on the ground," but certainly American troops in direct combat with this new enemy that thinks of itself as being at war with America, if it didn't already.

Cyrus Patten: A vote for reform is a vote for our public education system
The buzz is building around the need to reform Vermont's education system and for good reason. The teachers I speak with are talented but frustrated with bureaucracy. The governance and funding systems that support it are in need of a more thoughtful solution than was attempted last session. The parents I speak with are concerned about the cost of education particularly as it relates to the outcomes. Now is the time for smart reform of our education governance and funding systems.

Harry Chen and Tracy Dolan: On Ebola Preparedness in Vermont
Ebola is a deadly and dreaded disease that is ravaging West Africa, a part of the world that has far too little in the way of modern health care and public health infrastructure. The 2014 epidemic is the largest in history, and daily news of the continuing death toll and the extreme hardships facing the people and frontline health care workers there is heartbreaking. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and the international community are working heroically to stop the spread of Ebola at its source, and we must continue to dedicate resources and expertise to this effort. Brant Goode, one of our team at the Health Department, is in Liberia now, training health care workers how to protect themselves from the virus while caring for the sick.

Paul Cillo: Governor Prepares For 2016 Cuts To State Services
A month after announcing a 2 percent cut to the current year's budget, the Shumlin Administration is signaling its intention to make additional cuts of as much as 5 percent and possibly more next year (fiscal 2016). For an already anemic state government that is suffering from staffing shortages and struggling to meet its obligations to residents, the administration's directive cannot be good for Vermonters or for state employee morale.

Peter Stromgren: Redesigning Vermont's Economic Development Program Supports Growth
Vermonter's have seen a reduction in average salaries and a rise in under compensated opportunities. Our small state has also experienced a continued decline in our overall economy which has driven down our tax revenues putting a severe strain on our social programs and other state projects. This coupled with a reduction in Federal aid has forced the governor to ask state agencies to prepare level funding budgets, after the August cutbacks, for FY 2015 and to also to create a budget 5% lower after the August cutbacks. This is not the sign of a healthy economy. We are hanging on in hopes that better times are around the corner with no real plans to create a more vibrant economy.
