Tom Licata: The Ideology Of American Suicide
Progressivism - so pervasive in today's Democratic Party - is the ideology of American suicide and specifically of American Constitutionalism. This is the fourth in a series of writings dissecting and analyzing Progressivism's ideological beliefs and ideas, to which the just stated conclusion will become self-evident. "Suicide" is an emotive term but here I use its cognitive 'self-inflicting' meaning. That is, the demise of American Constitutionalism is coming almost entirely from internal or domestic sources, rather than external or foreign.

Thomas Salmon: Summing Up The Presence Of Vermont Yankee: 'You Done Good'
In 1958, when I moved from Boston to Bellows Falls, Vermont was something of an economic and political backwater. The economy was stagnant and political loyalties were virtually unchanged since the Civil War. More people moved out than moved in. Not until 1963 did the human population exceed the bovine.

Dottie Deans - Winding Down and Looking Ahead
As we wind down 2014 and look ahead to 2015 and our upcoming legislative session, I wanted to share a few thoughts. The holidays and the end of the year are not only a time for celebration and spending time with friends & family, it is the time of year where we have a moment to reflect, take a breath, and get ready to move forward in the year ahead.

Jack Hoffman: Schools Are Doing More And Spending More
Exhibit A among current critics of Vermont's education funding system is some version of a chart showing annual education expenditures going up over time and school enrollment going down. Why are we spending more and more money to educate fewer and fewer kids?

John McClaughry: Dubious Remedies For Containing Education Costs
Governor Shumlin and the legislative leadership have recently discovered that Vermonters are really, really unhappy about ever rising school property taxes. In a commentary published Dec. 3, the governor observed quite correctly "We all know that rising property taxes to fund education have put an unsustainable burden on Vermonters. Despite a steady decline in school enrollment over the last two decades, property tax payers have not seen a decline in their property taxes; they've seen the opposite."

Rep. Mark Higley: Can We Afford The Carbon Tax?
I would like to respond to an opinion piece in the Chronicle that Brian Shupe submitted on behalf of the (VNRC)Vermont Natural Resources Council and others. This summer I was inundated with calls and e-mails from unhappy constituents as well as out of state and out of country property owners. For good reason, they were upset that the property taxes in Jay and Westfield had gone up 18 percent and 19 percent respectively. Not hard to see how these double digit increases can be devastating to many Vermonters as well as those who come here to enjoy it's beauty and spend money locally. Now, it seems a push is on by the chair of the House Energy and Natural Resources committee as well as this new advocacy group Energy Independent Vermont to create the first state tax on fossil fuels ie. a carbon tax.

Gov. Peter Shumlin: Real Property Tax Relief
This week, we released an estimate that property taxes used to pay for public school education will increase once again this year to pay for a projected increase in school spending. While this year's projected property tax increase of around two cents is half of last year's, it is hardly good news. We all know that rising property taxes to fund education have put an unsustainable burden on Vermonters. Despite a steady decline in school enrollment over the last two decades, property tax payers have not seen a decline in their property taxes; they've seen the opposite. But while rising property taxes are one clear indication of the higher cost of education in Vermont, they are only the most visible aspect of the money Vermonters spend on our public education system.

Ann Coulter: Liberals Willing to Fight for the Last Drop of Black Blood
The riot in Ferguson reminds me, I hate criminals, but I hate liberals more. They planned this riot. They stoked the fire, lied about the evidence and produced a made-to-order riot.
