Mildred Elizabeth Gonyaw Major


Mildred Elizabeth Gonyaw Major, 93, formally of Island Pond, Vt., passed away on Jan. 20, 2013, in St. Albans, Vt. She was the widow of Rheal Major who predeceased her in 1999. She was born in Albany Center, Vt., on Aug. 30, 1919, the daughter of Michael (Mitch) and Sarah (Sadie) Noyes Gonyaw.

Mildred enjoyed traveling with her late husband, sewing for family members, gardening, knitting, and crocheting. She was a devoted housewife and mother and enjoyed working part time for the State of Vermont at the Brighton State Park for over 10 years.

She is survived by her children: Paulette Major of Barre, Vt., Patricia Oftedal and her husband Sven of Eastport, Maine, Lucian Major and his wife Lucille of Richmond, Vt., and Rene Major and his companion Sharon Towne of Colchester, Vt.; her grandchildren: Amy Moriarty and her husband Tom of Bennington, Vt., Christopher Major of Fairfax, Vt., Diane Bouchard and her husband Pierre of South Burlington, Vt.; her great-grandchildren: Taytum and Haley Bouchard of South Burlington, Vt. She is also survived by her brother Mahlon Gonyaw and his wife Madeline, and her sister-in-law Janet Major Doyon as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Marvin and his wife Donna and Roland and his wife Alice and grandson Marc Major.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 1199 Railroad St., Island Pond, VT. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the Vermont Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, 162 South Main Street, Waterbury, VT 05676 or The Vermont Chapter of The American Cancer Society, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
